An American Werewolf in Paris

We just spent 3 hours coming up with a title for our film. Now we're ready to output to DVD.

I can't believe you thought that

I just woke up from a nap, rubbed my eyes and everything looked blue. The first thing I thought was,"my eyes need to be white balanced."

behind the scenes

Team JUSTUS hard at work.

paperwork

Spending the morning getting all the proper paperwork in order for the turn in. I tend to recreate the official paperwork in Illustrator since the provided forms tend to be a little cramped and hard to read for my taste.

Got a head start on the screening ballot template. They'll definitely change, but the grunt work is done.

Very excited to be working with an Apple TV for the screenings this year. It affords me some leeway in the screening order that previously was kind of difficult to accommodate when having to screen on DVD.

Just a little over 8 hours until the films are do!

Never Work With Children

What an outright lie. Our kids delivered with more professionalism and authenticity than any adult actor I've ever worked with. And we survived a a cow attack. BONUS.

Brainful Productions...

...will be handing out something special for the screening of our film. Want one? Of course you do. Come get one at the 7PM showing on Tuesday, May 18th when we will be screening our film. Characters from our film will be present to hand out a little something to the first 300 people.

Stirring Up the Hornet's Nest

Literally. Carl, our director, got stung in the forehead. If anyone had it coming, it was him. Needless to say, close-ups for scene 3 were summarily abandoned ;(

Interesting

Two teams have contacted me about swearing in their films. The rule of thumb is that the films can be rated R, but NC-17 is frowned upon.

I think 2 teams have developed Tourettes syndrome!

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights...

In his sci-fi masterpiece, "Dune", the late great Frank Herbert wrote that "Fear is the mind killer". It is also the great creativity killer. Our experience with the 48HFP has just ended, less than 15 hours after it began. One of our actresses and our film editor (who had all the equiptment for said editing) decided at 7:30 am this morning they couldn't work on the project any longer. It wasn't "professional". It would adversely affect their "careers". I believe what they meant was, "I don't work the way you do and I am scared to try it that way,so I quit." If it had just been the two of them in the project, it wouldn't rate even a blink. Quit before you finish and you never have to worry about failure. (or success for that matter). However, there were at least 6 others involved who now find themselves unable to compete. If they quit at the start, we might have persevered without them but they let us shoot 80% or so of the footage and then got scared because it wasn't what they were used to or shot the way they wanted or in a genre they liked.
The 48HFP is a fabulous opportunity, not just as a stepping stone in your career path but as an artist, a team player and as a human being. It takes you outside your comfort zone, forces you to work in new ways and forces you to create something wonderful (or awful) that you didn't realize you had in you. Don't try and, as I said, you will never face failure (at least public failure). But you won't find success, within your peers or yourself. Six of us did not fail tonight because we tried. We reached for a goal, perhaps even overstretched our capabilities. Two of us failed because we didn't even try. I thought seriously about naming names of those who tried to drag us down and stop us from reaching towards that goal but I won't. Instead the names I want to leave you with are those of us who tried, fabulously, spectacularly, horibbly tried. And though we wont have 4-7 minutes of footage to show for it, we still won. Heather Wizzel, David Lewis, Jordan, Angel and me, Chris Cook-Sussan. We are the 10 Doors Creative. Tonight one door was closed on us but that's why there are other doors. We will be back burnt but unbeaten. We will tell our stories, and we will be heard. As for the others. They will have success...but only the ones they want you to see, the ones carefully crafted to make it appear as if they have a talent that is in fact,Thunder and lightning and signifying...nothing. To my crew, my friends-new and old, Thank you. I look forward to working with you again...and we will, I know. This is Chris Cook-Sussan and the 10 Doors Creative saying goodnight for now and best of luck to all the other participants in the 2010 48HFP. We are rooting for every one of you

Helicopter! Crane! Peter Coyote V.O.!

We got'em!!!! But how we'll employ them is a MYSTERY!

Getting Pretty Tired...

...but the script has to be finished. Almost done with the 1st draft. Writing horror at night is giving me goosebumps....

Checking in

Hello from Noobtacular headquarters! The spectacular group of noobs working on their horror film.

Pizza, chips, soda, and Spongebob napkins.
It's gonna be a busy weekend.

Ah, The Joy of Working with Volunteers

Well, it's 4:40pm and it was bound to happen eventually! I just got my first cancellation call... one of my ACs. This is either a good sign or a bad sign. Team Experience Studios, moving forward!

A truce

So, last weekend was the 3rd annual Seattle 24 Hour Film Race. VERY unfortunate timing.

Eli Martin, the event producer for the Seattle leg of the competition is a really nice guy. I bought a ticket for the screening last night, but unfortunately didn't have the time to attend. We had a brief chat and I assured him that the timing of both of our competitions was unfortunate, but my choice to run the 48HFP this weekend was in no way shape or form a conscious effort to mess with his event. We simply managed to choose a similar time frame independently and sign contracts that locked us into those dates.

I think we managed to affect both of our registration a little bit, but we made a pact that next year we would consult with each other earlier in the year and select dates for each event that won't interfere with our respective events.

Seattle's a small city and, as filmmakers, we all need to work together to make our projects happen.

12 hours and counting!

The initial blog posts have started! Woo hoo!

At around 5:30pm, filmmakers will begin showing up at Rung Studio to sign in and pick up their goodies bag from Cafe Vita!

At 6:15pm, I will give my annual "Here's how to be a responsible Seattle filmmaker" speech and then answer some rules clarifications.

6:30pm is when the fun starts! The teams begin drawing their genres from a brand spankin' new reusable 48 Hour Film Project bag. It's funny. Every year I talk to filmmakers that either loathe the idea of drawing musical or want nothing more than the challenge of making a musical! We shall see. We shall see.

This years official genre list is as follows:

Buddy Film
Comedy
Drama
Fantasy
Film de Femme (see below)
Film Noir
Horror
Mockumentary
Musical or Western
Road Movie
Romance
Sci Fi
Silent Film (see below)
Thriller/Suspense

At around 6:55pm, I will announce the required character, line 0f dialogue and prop... then I will repeat it about 748 times.

Then I will ask who wants to opt for the wild card genre and possibly pity those who do. But when life gives you "stoner or kung fu movie" you make...

HAI KWON DO

This competition is all about embracing the numerous limitations. Sometimes creative restrictions can lead to greater creative freedom!

How's that for a paradox?

Butterflies!

Yeah, I've got those. More to come.

Justice

Do you think it means JUSTUS?

OMG we are doing this!

Two weeks ago we didn't know the contest existed, now we are signed up, we've recruited a team and are very excited (as well as terrified out of our mind). But-No worries, we strive forward, lo there may be giants we are unafraid (at least I think we are). The other teams in the 48HFP better watch out because 10 DOORS CREATIVEis here and ready to go!
Chris, David,Jozelyn, Angel, Boo, Heather, Jay and all the rest!

THERE IS NO CRYING IN FILM MAKING

I cried last night.
Twice.

Two people called and said they couldn't make it this weekend to the festival. That would have been okay if it wasn't the Editor and camera operator. What the heck kind of production can you have without an editor and a camera man.

Okay. Breathe. Breathe. B...B....B...Brush off those final cut pro skills and go borrow the first cam you can get your hands on.
Done.

My brother from Virginia called. He said not to worry. It's just about the stories behind the story you're going to tell.

So what's the story behind the story that hasn't even been told yet? A creative kick in the pants. We can do this. I love this festival because it forces everyone to just jump in. In the end we'll make a film with whatever we have on Friday. And it will be dope. If only just to me.

Then someone else called and backed out. Damn...I didn't cry that time. Let's do this.

Sponsors really stepped up!

This year, Adobe is donating a ton of software to the award winning teams in this year's competition. Bad Animals audio is also donating a day's worth of Audio sweetening. Rung Studio, where we hold the kickoff and dropoff events is donating a day of studio time. Cafe Vita is making care packages for the teams so they stay caffeinated during the weekend.

It's been a good year for sponsorship. These filmmakers really do some amazing work and it's so great to see them rewarded for their work!

Two and a half days to go!

The 6th year of the Seattle 48 Hour Film Project kicks off on Friday, May 14th at 7pm. Competitors will have 48 hours to create a 4-7 minute film using a genre they draw as well as a character, line of dialogue and a prop.

So far we have 44 teams and room for 8 more!

Films will screen at the Harvard Exit Theater Tuesday and Wednesday May 18 & 19 at 7 and 9pm.
